Happy birthday

President Mahinda Rajapaksa celebrates his birthday today. His political career started in 1970 when he was elected from the Beliatta constituency of the Hambantota District


President Mahinda Rajapaksa

represented by the Rajapaksas of Giruwapattuwa for almost a century.

He was sworn in as the fifth Executive President on November 19, 2005 and was the Prime Minister at the time he contested the Presidential election that year. His first term in Parliament was in the United Front Government led by Prime Minister Sirimavo Bandaranaike.

He was the Labour Minister in the People’s Alliance Government of 1994 and Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Minister from 1997. His father D. A. Rajapaksa also represented the same constituency in Parliament and was one of the founder members of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party. President Rajapaksa an Attorney-at-Law, is a past student of Mahinda College, Galle and Thurstan College, Colombo. WN
