Evoking 'Colombo Colombo' to the city
Aravinda HETTIARACHCHI
"Colombo is a definite place with a definite name and an image or a
definite complex of places in Sri Lankan society. Colombo is the rupture
of this whole context. There is a reasonable ground to name Colombo as a
model of the whole island, because it decides the whole amount of
relationships as the center of making

relationships in this island," said the director of the stage play
-'Colombo Colombo'.
Indika Ferdinando, named himself as a theatre artist in a particular
way because of his thinking. He was guided by formal and informal ways
of study. To him, the theatre is a media of an illusive zone and a
dynamic power by means of an exact expand of time and space which almost
depend on the human body. According to the human way of practice,
theatre always becomes a new and beautiful phenomenology.
Therefore, Ferdinando has collected some alienated events from the
backdrops of the Colombo society and put them in a concrete context of
interpretation to express his idea of the whole system of the society of
the island. This creation surfaced in the stage play called 'Colombo
Colombo.'
Ferdinando says, "theatre art has been over-determined as a one
limited structure until now. Some of my friends and I found that this
happens due to the one-sided anti-female orgasm in every event of the
society. This drives the whole society into understanding that the human
as a fixed entity of 'one thing.' This way of thinking serves the above
anti-female ideology. Contrary to this, we thought that the life in
society or the theatre itself should go touch the uncertainties in
man-woman life. We tried to propose a certainty within these
uncertainties, against the one-sided type climax of Bharathamuni or some
other theatre artists. We propose that there can be multiple orgasms
conditioned in every event of this society. This exists in the reality
but not in the present dominant discourse of the society." |
