'JVP-UNP TU action irony of fate'
Sanjaya Asela Maturata
It is most disgusting to see the JVP launching trade union action in
league with unions of the UNP which was responsible to burning its
founder leader Rohana Wijeweera alive at the Borella cemetery 20 years
ago said. T. Kulatunga, Eksath Welanda ha Samupakara Sevaka Maha
Sangamaya (United Commercial and Co-operative employees General Union)
organiser commenting on the work to rule campaign launched by JVP and
UNP trade unions today.
Kulatunga said it is also an irony of fate that this JVP-UNP alliance
had taken shape in November, the month earmarked to commemorate fallen
JVP heroes (Il Maha Samaruwa).
He said the JVP had claimed to be the leading left party in Sri Lanka
with super Marxists. But it was questionable as to what sort of
liberation it could provide the working class by aligning with the UNP
which had suppressed working class struggles in this country with an
iron fist.
Kulatunga said the JVP had destroyed the lives of 60,000 innocent
youth by distorting marxist-leninist thought. By resorting to trade
union action the JVP was only trying to reinstal a UNP government that
would sound the death knell of the lower rung JVP membership. He said it
was this very same JVP which betrayed workers during the 1980 July
strike.
