Three new meet records set up

Three new meet records were set up on the final day of the 26th Mercantile Athletic Federation Championship which concluded at the Sugathadasa Stadium yesterday.

Kushani Karunaratne of Janashakthi Insurance set a new record in the championship category 1500m with a timing of 4.50.2 seconds to better the record held by R.K.A.S Sandamali of MAS group in 5.01.9 seconds Anusha of Janashakthi Insurance won the women’s Discus Throw with a distance of 36.82 metres to beat the previous record held by N. Hettiarachchi of Ceylinco of 32.42 metres.

M.D.T Nilmini of Smart Shirts Lanka set a new record in the Women’s Novices category 5000m event with a timing of 26.24.2 seconds to better the record held by W.K.I Damayanthi of Slimline in 26.35.9 seconds.

R.M Ranthirige of Airport Aviation was adjudged best men’s athlete while Amali Wijesinghe of Janashakthi Insurance was picked as the best women’s athlete in the championship category. Best men’s athlete was O.B.A.R Fonseka and Best womens athlete was Awwiaja Fernando in the Novices category.

Meanwhile best men’s athlete was M.R.R Mawala of Srilankan Airlines and former Sri Lanka Athlete Dhammika Menike of the Hatton National Bank was the best women’s athlete in the Veterans category respectively.

Srilankan Airlines were the Overall champions in this athletic meet.

Janashakthi athletes collected an impressive 48 points to emerge as the winners of the championship category, Smart Shirts Lanka athletes accumulated a massive 52 points to be the best of the Novices category, Airport Aviation men’s athletes collected an impressive 117 points and Srilankan Airlines collected 34 points to emerge winners of the Veterans category respectively.

200m: Saman Indika of Sterling Lanka Apparels – 23.0sec

400m: S.P. Asanka Senadeera of Sterling Lanka Apparels – 52.7sec

1500m: Sajith Fernando of Sterling Lanka Apparels – 4.37.0sec

Long Jump

R.M Rantetiya of Airport Aviation – 6.91sec

Championship category (women’s) 1500m: Kushani Karunaratne of Janashakthi Insurance – 4.50.2sec
