New tax structure on way

Import duty on essentials to be reduced:

The Government is reviewing the entire tax structure to afford relief to the people in the aftermath of the war. Treasury Secretary Dr. P.B. Jayasundara told the Daily News that the whole tax system will be reconsidered on instructions by President Mahinda Rajapaksa as the Finance and Planning Minister to fit into the current pattern of consumption and taking into account the on-going development activities of the country after eradicating LTTE terrorism.

Sri Lanka-Bulgaria to strengthen cooperation

President of the Republic of Bulgaria Georgi Parvanov called on President Mahinda Rajapaksa on November 1 during a one-day visit to Colombo. During the meeting it was acknowledged that there are possibilities for further developing bilateral political dialogue and cooperation in the economic, cultural and other spheres of mutual interest. It was pointed out that both sides enjoy excellent cooperation in the framework of the UN and other international organizations.

Export earnings from the three main crops, Tea, Rubber and Coconut exceeded US$ 200 billion providing employment for over 1.5 million people in the recent past, Plantation Industries Minister D.M. Jayaratne said.

‘Sri Lanka can face the GSP+ risk’

With proper focus and preparation Sri Lanka can face the GSP+ risk and the Government has already taken necessary steps to manage this risk, Central Bank Governor Ajith Nivard Cabraal said at a media briefing on “ GSP+ Scheme and Sri Lanka from a risk management perspective” at the Central Bank yesterday.
