Two years RI on each accused

Panadura Magistrate Thusara Rajasinghe imposed a sentence of two years rigorous imprisonment on each of the accused who pleaded guilty to the charges of burglary and possessing stolen articles.

The accused are Sri Nath Fernando and Amila Piyankara. Panadura Police prosecuted.


Three dead in two accidents

Two separate vehicle accidents claimed the lives of three persons in the wee hours of yesterday.

Two youth, one female and a male died as the motor bike they were traveling collided with a parked lorry around 5.45 a.m. at Mihiritenne on the Matara-Colombo main road.

In another accident in Thiniyawala, Kalutara a van carrying eight passengers had gone off the road as the driver had fallen asleep. A 71-year-old man died and several others were injured, according to the Police.


Buddhist discussion

Prmasara Epasinghe will participate in a Buddhist discussion relating to the significance of Il Full Moon Poya Day today. This program will be telecast over Dialog TV at 7.30 a.m.


US Ambassador in Sri Lanka Patricia Butenis met Healthcare and Nutrition Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva recently at the Ministry and discussed matters relating to healthcare facilities provided to IDP’s in the welfare centres and also at the resettlement villages. American envoy promised to extend all the support needed and said that she was satisfied with the facilities provided by the Government at welfare centres during her recent visit to the Vanni.


Community projects

Twelve Community projects will be implemented at village level in the Panvila Divisional Secretariat area. The estimated value of these projects is Rs. 1.7 million.


Kitul promotion project

Galagedara Hataraliyadda of Tumpane Divisional Secretariat Vidhata centre in collaboration with the rural industries and self-employment promotion unit and the National Apprenticeship Board have launched a pilot project for the promotion of Kithul based projects.

A training program was conducted recently regarding the production of treacle, kithul jaggery and other products.


Co-op city branch opened

The Co-opcity branch of the Udadumbara M.P.C.S. Union was opened in Handaganawa Village recently. MPCS General Manager, Members of the Board Directors and the public were present.

The Co-op Development Department has allocated for each outlet a sum of Rs. one million.


Lightning kills school boy

A nine-year school boy was killed in Openayake area when lighting struck him on Saturday afternoon during heavy rain which leashed the area.

The boy was pronounced dead when he was admitted to Pelmadulla hospital.
