He said after restrictions on fishing in the Northern sea were
lifted, fishermen of these areas had been continuously engaged in
fishing and their fish harvest had rapidly increased.
The main objective of the stall is to market the excess fish harvest
which is being transported to Colombo from the North.
Minister Perera said that the decision had been taken as a result of
regular visits made by him during the post war period.
Fishermen particularly in the North had to face numerous shortcomings
and difficulties due to fishing restrictions imposed on them for
security purposes during LTTE terrorist activities over the past three
decades.
“The country will become self sufficient in fish production once the
resettlement process is completed and they are deployed to full
capacity,” Perera said.
Meanwhile the prices of fish at the retail markets in Pettah had come
down considerably from the high prices that prevailed during the last
two weeks.
A kilogram of Thalapath, Kelawalla, Balaya, Salaya and Haalmessa was
recorded at Rs. 200, 150, 100, 60 and 30 respectively. (SW)
