Probe into death threats on editors
President Mahinda Rajapaksa yesterday ordered the Police to carry out
a most thorough investigation into the recent death threat received by
post by Sunday Leader Editor Fredrica Jansz and News Editor Munza
Mushtaq. This order followed representations made to the President by
Fredrica Jansz.
Another contaminated vial

Another injection vial containing glass particles was detected at
Ward 67 of the Kandy General Hospital yesterday.
The discovery has been reported to the health authorities while a
special investigation has been launched.
Hand bag robbers caught
Puttalam group correspondent
Chilaw Police arrested two suspects who were allegedly involved in
robbing handbags of women employees working in garment factories in the
area.
At the time of the arrest police also recovered four handbags
containing Rs. 30,000 and a mobile phone.
It is alleged that these suspect were in the habit of carrying out
these robberies during pay days at garment factories.
Minister Chamal 67 today
Ports Aviation and Water Management Minister Chamal Rajapaksa
celebrates his 67th birthday today.
The senior member of the illustrious Rajapaksa family of
Giruwapatttuwa in Hambantota, he is the elder son of late
Parliamentarian D.A. Rajapaksa, one of the founder members of the SLFP
and the older brother of President Mahinda Rajapaksa.
New stamp
The Philatelic Bureau of the Postal Department will issue a new
postage stamp to mark the Humane Eradication of Rabies in Sri Lanka
initiated on a directive by President Mahinda Rajapaksa in May 2006,
making Sri Lanka the first South Asian country to implement such a
policy.
The first stamp of this issue will be cancelled by Acting Minister of
Post and Minister of Export Development and International Trade Prof. G.
L. Peiris at the Committee Room E of the BMICH at 5.30 p.m. on Thursday,
November 5.
Get-together
The Annual Get-together of the Advanced Level students of Samudradevi
Balika Maha Vidyalaya, Nugegoda will be held at 2.30 p.m. today
‘Wasantha Ranasinghe’ hall of the college.

Bharatha Natyam recital
The Indian Cultural Centre, Colombo will hold a Bharatha Natyam
recital by the students of the Indian Cultural Centre trained by Guru

Blood donation
A blood donation program organized by the Old Anandians 70-75 Group
will be held at the Centenary Building of the college on October 31,
Saturday from 8 a.m. to 2. p.m. All blood donors will be given a free
insurance policy to the value of Rs. 50,000.

PM to open Sanchi rest
Prime Minister Ratnasiri Wickramanayaka will open the three storeyed
rest hall at Sanchi Sacred Area, Bopal, India on October 31. This rest
hall which won a long-felt need for Buddhist pilgrims has been built at
a cost of Rs. 84 million by the Urban Development and Sacred Area
Development Ministry under the guidance of President Mahinda Rajapaksa
and under the supervision of Minister Dinesh Gunawardene. Indian Central
Government and State government donated the land at the request of the
Sri Lanka Maha Bodhi Society.
World thrift day
The National Savings Bank has organised a program to mark the 85th
World Thrift Day which falls on October 31. The special commemorative
program will be held at the Dharmapala grounds, Galle and a motorcade
taking NSB employees to the venue will leave the Kollupitiya NSB head
office at 8 am on the same day.
Help needed
Three and a half year old Savindi Tharushika of Battebedda,
Hingurupanagala, Kotapola is suffering from a severe brain disease and
developed a large growth on her head. Her mother and father have no
permanent employment and unable to bear the heavy expenditure for
pursuing medical treatment. Parents request philanthropists to assist
their daughter's cause by sending financial contributions. All

Fined for keeping Sambur flesh

A person who pleaded guilty for having two kilos of sambur flesh in
possession was fined Rs. 15,000 by Dambulla Magistrate and District
Judge Nimal Ranaweera.

Govt to maintain rice buffer stock
The Government will take steps to maintain rice buffer stocks to
counter artificial price hikes and shortages in the market, the Media
and Information Minister Anura Priyadarshana Yapa said.
Accordingly 50,000 metric tonnes of rice will be imported in due
course. The buffer stock be the ideal answer for artificial shortages
created by racketeers while bringing down prices, the Minister Yapa
said.
Aim goes wrong for youth
A youth who jumped into the sea to escape the wrath of the passengers
after stoning a train in Bambalapitiya is believed to have drowned and
the police were searching for the body. The incident took place
yesterday evening.
According to residents the youth was of unsound mind.
