Raid on unhygienic eating houses

Unhygienic food valued at over Rs. 100,000 seized from 64 eating houses in Tirukovil were destroyed by health officials. The officials also discovered several shops selling outdated and spoilt drugs.


Dengue: 13 die in Matale

Thirteen people have died of dengue fever in the Matale district, health officials said.

According to health authorities about 1,500 suspected dengue patients have been found in the district.


Adding fuel to fire

A motor cyclist died in a collision of two motor cycles at Mudalappaliya, Kalpitiya on Monday.

Police said a motor cycle driven in one direction had crashed on to another motor cycle which was being pushed by the other cyclist when it had stalled after running out of fuel. Both cyclists were injured and admitted to the Kalpitiya hospital where one of them succumbed to his injuries. The deceased was identified as Tuan Mohamed, 46, of Mudalappaliya. Kalpitiya police are investigating.


Olcott oration

The annual 'Olcott Oration' organized by the Ananda College OBA to commemorate the founders of Ananda will be held at the Kularatne Auditorium Ananda College on Saturday, November 14 at 4.45 p.m.

The speaker will be Defence Public Security, Law and Order Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa RWP RSP psc MSc, D. Litt (Honoris Causa) who is an old boy of the college.

Death of former Lake House staffer T. L. Perera

The death occurred of T. L. Perera, a former Senior Personnel Officer attached to Lake House. He was the father of Champa Perera, Secretary to the Editor Daily News. Prior to becoming Personnel Officer he held many other positions at Lake House including that of Welfare Officer. Besides Champa he leaves his wife Chandra and daughter Chintha. His remains are lying at his residence No. 162/1E, Sethsiri Place, Pannipitiya. Cremation takes place at the Pannipitiya General Cemetery on Thursday, October 29 at 3 p.m.


Training course for media academy students

The eigth batch of the youth recruited to the media academy conducted by the National Youth Services Council in collaboration with Colombo University, Sripalee Campus, Horana will undergo a training course at the National Youth centre, Maharagama from November 6 to 20.

Blood donation

A blood donation camp organised by YALE English College, Miriswatta, Gampaha for the 24th consecutive year will be held at Sanasa auditorium Miriswatta on November 1.


Collision: One dies

A motorcyclist on admission to Kandy general hospital died last Sunday following a head-on collision between a SLTB bus and a motorcycle along the Thalawakelle-Nuwara Eliya road.

The victim is identified as Mahindasoma (56) of Pahalagedara, Bogahawela, Punduluoya. The driver of the bus was taken into custody and Thalawakelle police is investigating.


Explosives recovered

The Vavuniya district criminal investigation unit conducted a raid at Karayamulliwaikkal in Mullaitivu and recovered several highly explosive items which included 300 kg of TNT explosives, 25 kg of c4 explosives, 01 - T56 weapon, 02 - T56 magazine, 03 pressure bombs each weighing 5 kgm and 10 meters of detonator cord.


Nutrition program for IDP children

The nutrition division of the Education Ministry is implementing a special nutrition program for the schoolchildren in the IDP villages of the North at a cost of Rs. 34 million on a decision made by Minister Susil Premajayantha.

The program will start at Chettikulam tomorrow. Around 65,000 schoolchildren would benefit, a Ministry press release said.

Special nutritional foods are given to the parents of the children in the area and parents prepare cooked food for the children to prevent malnutrition among their children, the release said.


Water shortage in hospital

Patients at Tirukovila Hospital are in danger of being sent home, as there is an acute shortage of water in the Hospital. The wells have dried up.

The Hospital needs seven doctors, but there are only four doctors. The Dental Ward is closed with the transfer of the Dental Surgeon. The X-Ray section is closed, and additional pharmacists and radiographer are also needed.


Commemorative Pinkama

A commemorative pinkama to mark the 80th anniversary of Lumbini Maha Vidyalaya, Colombo will be held at the school premises on October 29 and 30. Highlights will include a Bodhi pooja and an all night pirith chanting on October 29 and a Heel dana to Bhikkhus on October 30.


Ceremony of distribute drafts stipends

The Sri Lanka Islamic Centre has organized a ceremony under the patronage of Parliamentary Affairs and SLIC Chairman M.H. Mohamed to distribute Draft Stipends for IDB University students to the Islamic Centre on November 1 at 8.30 a.m. at the Sri Lanka Islamic Centre Reception Hall, No. 10, Rajapokuna Mawatha, Maligawatta, Colombo 10.


Book launch

A.J. Kanagaratnam - Conscience of Jaffna, a book of collected writings and articles on one of leading intellectuals of the North translated to Sinhala by Saminathan Wimal, lecturer University of Jaffna will be launched at the Dr. N.M. Perera Centre, Kotte Road, Borella on October 30 at 5.00 p.m. A special lecture on Kanagaratnam and his times will be delivered by Professor Sucharitha Gamlath.


One held for robberies

A suspect who was alleged to have committed several robberies in Anuradhapura, Minuwangoda, Nittambuwa and Veyangoda areas was arrested by the Veyangoda police along with stolen goods including digital cameras, cell-phones valued over Rs. one million.

The suspect of Thihariya was produced before Attanagalla Magistrate and Additional District Judge, D.A. Ruwan Pathirana and remanded till November 4.
