Man stabbed in Police station

A complainant in a case was stabbed by the defendant at the Ratnapura Police Station where they had been summoned by Police to settle the dispute outside Court on Tuesday.

The complainant who received stab injuries was admitted to the Ratnapura Hospital by the police who arrested the assailant on the spot.


Speed demon kills one

A motorcyclist died and the pillion rider was injured and admitted to the Wathupitiwala Hospital when a speeding vehicle knocked down the motorcycle they were riding at the Makkanigoda junciton as they were trying to turn off to a by road on the Nittambuwa-Warakapola road on Tuesday. The errant driver had fled the scene.


Lecture

The Dr. A.N.S. Kulasinghe Memorial Lecture for the third consecutive year, will be delivered by Eng. (Dr) A.C. Visvalingam (Consultant), on "Water Management Lessons from the Walawe Project", on October 26, at 5.15 p.m. at the Wimalasurendra Auditorium of the Institution of Engineers, Sri Lanka (IESL), at 120/15, Wijerama Mawatha, Colombo 7.


Indonesia, Australia strike asylum-seeker deal

Australia and Indonesia have agreed to work on setting up a new framework to deal with asylum seekers intercepted in international waters.

The agreement was reached during a meeting between the Prime Minister Kevin Rudd and the Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono in Jakarta. Radio Australia


Inauguration ceremony

An Inauguration ceremony for establishing a new Economics and Statistics Department, the Faculty of Social Sciences and Languages, Sabaragamuwa University will be held on October 22 today.

Vice Chancellor of the University, Senior Prof. Mahinda S. Rupasinghe will be the Chief Guest and the First Vice Chancellor Senior Prof. Dayananda Somasundara will preside the occasion.

The inaugural address will be delivered by Prof. Dayananda Somasundara on "Global Economic Crisis and the Sri Lankan Economy.


Hungary upgrades H'tota Hospital

A new building complex is being set up at Hambantota General Hospital at a cost of Rs. 247 million to ease the congestion at the existing wards at the hospital funded by Hungarian government.

The Treasury is also providing funds for this.

The hospital caters to nearly 500,000 patients per month. The new building will consist of a ward complex with 360 beds.


Areca cultivation to be developed

The Central Provincial Agriculture department will expand the areca cultivation in Matale. Major irrigation schemes fed by Mahaweli water and the wet zone of the district will be utilized for this.

There is a high demand for arecanuts based products in the local and foreign markets. Planting material and the training will be provided for the growers by the agriculture department.


Vidatha Vidu Dekma - 2009

The Science and Technology Ministry has organized awareness programs/ exhibitions on Science and Technology to exhibit and promote the products and services of the Vidatha entrepreneurs and new inventors.

The Galle district Science and Technology exhibition organized by the Galle district “Vidatha” organization attached to the Science and Technology Ministry will be held on October 22 at 9.00 a.m. under the patronage of Science and Technology Minister Prof. Tissa Vitharana, together with the participation of Ministers, Members of Parliament, Provincial Council Chief Minister designate Provincial Council Minister and members of Galle district at the Galle Municipal Council grounds.

This exhibition will be held under the direct supervision and guidance of the divisional and District Secretaries with the support of the officers and staff of Vidatha Resource Centres established in Galle district.

Parallel to the exhibition there will be seminars and contests at school level among the Galle district schools and valuable gifts will be awarded.

The Ampara district Science and Technology exhibition will be held on October 24 at 9.00 a.m. with the participation of Science and Technology Minister Prof. Tissa Vitharana, together with distinguished guests at the Samanthurai Darusalam Maha Vidyalaya. Ministers, Members of Parliament, Provincial Council Minister and Members will participate in the opening ceremony.

The Galle District Science and Technology exhibition will be held on October 22 from 9.00 a.m. onwards at the Galle Municipal Council grounds. The Ampara district science and technology exhibition will be held on October 24 from 9.00 a.m. onwards at the Samanthurai Darusalam Maha Vidyalaya.


RASSL Lecture

The monthly lecture of the Royal Asiatic Society of Sri Lanka (RASSL) will be held at 5.00 p.m. on Monday October 26 at the Gamini Dissanayake Auditorium of the Mahaweli Centre, No. 96, Ananda Coomaraswamy Mawatha, Colombo 7.


Get-together

The annual get-together of the Old Anandians' 81 Group will be held on October 24 at the Earls Court of Cinnamon Lakeside (formerly Trans Asia) Hotel from 8.30 p.m. onwards. For details contact Neel (0773023630).


Special clinic

A special Deformity Rehabilitation Indigenous Medical Clinic for the members of the Armed Forces who had suffered injuries will be opened today at Glenie Street, Slave Island, Colombo 2 by the Colombo Municipal Council on the direction of the Chief City Administrator CMC Omar Kamil, today.

President of the Ranaviru Seva Authority Anoma Fonseka and Chairperson Maj Gen Denzil Kobbekaduwa Foundation Lalie Kobbekaduwa will declare the clinic open, CMC officials said.

Cyril de Zoysa commemoration

The 113th birth anniversary of late Cyril de Zoysa, the founder of Bodhi Trust Kalutara will be commemorated on October 26 with a series of religious ceremonies at the Kalutara Bodhi.


Workshop

A three day workshop for Provincial Journalists in the Galle District will be held at the Unawatuna Beach Hotel from October 23 to 25. The workshop is organized and conducted by the Sri Lanka Press Institute.
