Renown at top
Draw with Saunders:
Chithana WASALA
Table leaders Renown SC had to settle for a two all draw with
Saunders SC in their Dialog Champions League football match played at
the City League Ground yesterday.
At the half time scores were level at 1-1.
M.N.M. Fazal put Renown ahead, netting the first goal of the match,
in the 19th minute. Saunders fought back well and it was in the 31st
minute that Dilan Kaushalya de Silva succeeded in ntting in the first
goal converting a well placed corner kick by Sameera Perera to equalise.
After the half time, Sudhara Madushanka gave Saunders the lead,
scoring a goal in the 56th minute. After the third goal of the match, it
was a different picture on the field as the face of the match changed
from a slow game to a fast one when Saunders tried to extend the lead
while Renown played attacking soccer to make a match of it.
It took further 23 minutes for Renown SC to penetrate the defence of
their opponents when Mohamed Nazurulla netted in the ball to level the
scores.
Both teams displayed quality soccer for the good crowd that was
present to witness this game.
Referee Anura de Silva had to pull out the yellow card on two
occasions during the match, to Saunders SC’s C.L. Samarasekera and
Renown SC’s Mohamed Nazurulla rough play.
The spectator attendance for the Dialog Champions League has shown a
great increase in the past few weeks specially at the City Football
League ground. This is a good sign for the game here which was lacking
the support of the spectators.
Anura de Silva refereed.
Blue Star - NYSC drawn
Blue Star SC who moved up to the second spot last week managed to
hold the Negombo Youth SC team to a one all draw at Vernon U. Fernando
Stadium, Kalutara. This draw helped them to grab another point and come
to equal terms with group ‘B’ leaders Don Bosco SC with 12 points.
Ratnam win
Meanwhile in another game played at FFSL ground Kelaniya, Ratnam SC
beat the week opponents the Jupiters SC from Negombo two goals to nil.
But this victory was not sufficient for Ratnam SC to move up in the
table.
Army settle for a draw
At CR & FC ground, New Youngs SC faced strong Sri Lanka Army and
managed to force a one all draw. This draw was not helpful to any of the
teams as no change took place in their positions though they collected a
point each. |
