Tax officer gets eight years' RI

Colombo High Court Judge Sunil Rajapakse on Tuesday convicted a Tax Officer for accepting a bribe.

The Court convicted Sokku Subramanium of Nuwara Eliya for accepting a gratification of Rs 25,000 from a businessman at Welimada in order not to take measures against him for not paying taxes in 2000.

The Court sentenced the convict to eight years rigorous imprisonment and a fine of Rs 20,000 and another four years RI in default. The Court also ordered the convict to pay Rs 25,000 the amount he accepted as the bribe and another one year RI in default.

The Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption filed the indictment against S. Subramanium.
