The Supreme Court allowed the students of the Kelaniya University who
filed an FR case alleging that they were arrested arbitrarily on
February 5 by the Kiribathgoda Police to add the names of the other
Police Officers as the respondents.
The Court allowed the petitioners to ascertain the names of the
Police Officers and add their names as the respondents after attorney
Udith Igalahewa, the Counsel appearing for the petitioners submitted
that names of certain Police officers who were involved in the incident
were revealed through the objections procured before the Court by the
present respondents of the plaint.
The Bench comprised Supreme Court Justices Shirani Bandaranaike, S.
I. Imam and Chandra Ekanayake. The petitioners, students of the Kelaniya
University Inoka Nadeeshani and Anuja Samantha filed the Fundamental
Rights application on an earlier date citing the SSP of Peliyagoda G.K.D.
Somapala, OIC of the Kiribathgoda Police and few others as the
respondents.
The petitioners stated that 16 students were arbitrarily arrested by
the Kiribathgoda Police on February 05, 2009 after a clash between two
student groups in the university. Nine of them were female students but
they were taken into custody without the participation of Women Police
Officers. The Court put off the hearing for December 16. |
