Finance and State Revenue Minister Ranjith Siyambalapitiya told
Parliament yesterday a special survey is underway on the existing job
vacancies in the State sector to provide employment to graduates next
year.
Minister Siyambalapitiya |
The Government has provided State sector employment to 57,764
graduates from 2004 todate.
In addition many new job opportunities have been created by
considering a degree as the key qualification, he said.
The Minister said the unemployment rate which was 7.7 percent in 2005
has gone down to 5.2 percent by the end of year 2008. This indicates the
Government has created a large number of job opportunities in relation
to all sectors.
"At present there are nearly 25,000 job vacancies in the State sector
and measures will be taken to fill them in accordance with the relevant
recruitment procedure. The Government has not suspended the State sector
recruitments."
The Minister categorically denied certain statements made that a
circular has been issued to suspend recruitments in the State sector.
Arrangements have also been made to provide teaching appointments to
3,174 aesthetic graduates.
However, the State sector cannot solve the entire unemployment
problem of the country.
The Minister made these observations in response to a special
statement made by JVP MP Anura Kumara Dissanayake.
