The United Nations, established at the end of history's most
devastating war with a mandate to ensure a safer and better world for
all, completes 64 years of existence on October 24 this year amidst
multiple crises - financial, economic, food, fuel and ecological.
The world Body was officially born on October 24, 1945 when majority
of the countries participated at the United Nations conference on
International Organization in St. Franciso ratified the Charter of the
United Nations.
The United Nations since its inception, has been advocating
multilateralism, in addressing global issues based on the premises
"common problems need common solutions." Ban Ki-Moon, Secretary General
of the United Nations, in his message to mark the 64th anniversary says
"this is a unique moment in world affairs. Multiple crises - food, fuel,
financial, flu - are hitting at once.. Climate change looms larger every
day. Each illustrates a 21st century truth: we share one planet, one
home. As people, as nations, as a species, we sink or swim together."
The present day world reeling under numerous crises that threaten the
very existence of human civilization seems to look to the United Nations
for their satisfactory resolution.
This was evident by speeches made by leaders of member nations during
the recently concluded general debate of the 64th regular sessions of
the United Nations General Assembly. Speakers reiterated their faith and
confidence in the United Nations as the most dependable instrument in
addressing global issues also call for meaningful reforms to the
organization in order to make it an effective tool in the hands of the
people.
They wanted the United Nations to take leadership in pioneering a way
out of the current impasse. |
