Humane look at human weaknesses

Hansa Rengum, the 14th tele-drama directed by Tissa Wijekoon, will be tele cast on the National Rupavahini every Monday at 8.35 p.m., beginning from October 19. A preview of the drama shown on the ninth at the Namel Malini Punchi Theatre showcases a humane perspective of human weaknesses and foibles without being judgemental or condemning.

A scene from Hansa Rengum

Engineer Kanishka (Amitta Weerasinghe) is married to Sayurangi (Roma Rosi) who is the daughter of a former member of parliament (Gnananga Gunawardena). Kanishka is sober and dignified while Sayurangi is fun-loving.

Although this gap creates conflicts, the two manage to get on well together. Gunaratne (Buddhika Jayaratne) delivers bread to the Police and other places from a bakery but tells his girl friend, Nimali, (Sasanthi Jayasekera) that he works in the Police which turns her mother (Kusum Maldeniya) in his favour. Nimali's brother, Piyasiri, (Sarath Gunasekera) is a temporary minor worker for an Army Captain but tells his village that he works in the Army.

Piyasiri takes steps to make sure that Gunaratne marries Nimali even after Gunaratne's deceit is exposed because what matters to him is that Nimali is not jilted in the attempts that Gunaratne's mother (Miyuri Samarasinghe) takes to support the bakery owner (G.R. Perera)' s decision to make a match between Gunaratne and his daughter (Vinoja Nilanthi). Money obtained from this match can make the marriage between Gunaratne's sister, Shyamali, (Nadeesha Wijekoon) and Sunimal (Manjula Moragaha) a reality as parents of Sunimal object to his marrying Shyamali without a dowry. Piyasiri is able to act forcefully with the help of his army friends as Gunaratne was able to hide his real state of affairs from Piyasiri and Nimali with the help of his Police friends.

Runing parallel to this battle of wits is that of Kanishka who gets a transfer to his village, and is opposed in his work in building a concrete bridge for the villagers by the Pradeshiya Sabha member (Wasantha Kumarasiri) and his brother (Sarath Dikkumbura). When Nimali marries Gunaratne, he loses his job at the bakery.

The P.S. member and his brother help Gunaratne earn a living through illicit liquor. The bakery owner finds out and takes revenge for the failed marriage of his daughter by scheming to put Gunaratne in prison. Nimali asks Kanishka for work as a labourer but he offers her a job as a daily helper in his home to look after his mother (Ratnavali Kekunawala).

The P.S.member and his brother cannot influence Kanishka by undue means and they plot to remove him through other ways, such as spreading news that Kanishka has an affair with Nimali which enrages Sayurangi and makes her leave him.

The drama climbs to a climax when Kanishka is shot at by the hench men of the ruthless duo. But it also closes on a very heartening end as Wijekoon does not intend condemning any character but try to focus on reasons why people behave as they do and how they can fall from where they ideally should be, in their struggles to face the challenges of life.

Other cast comprises Ratna Lanka Abeywickrema, Saranapala Jayasuriya, Nimal Wijesinghe, Lal Kularatne, Vasanthi Agalawatte, Dayaratne Liyanage, Kamanthi Dulwala, Chula Mendis and Susil Rajasuriya. D.U. Kandanarachchi, Sanath Dharmaratne and Pathmasiri Gamage produced the drama.

The script is by Sunanda Silva, camera by Jayantha, editing by Chamika Lakmal, art direction by Ashok Chaminda Vaas and make-up by Henry Premaratne. Harsha Ariyasinghe directed music with play back singing by Uresha Ravihari and lyrics by Nandana Hettiarachchi.

Wijekoon completes 20 years in the field of tele-drama which he entered as the assistant director of Muthulande. He is also known for his scintillating choreography for song videos.
