Application forms for new schools from next month

Application forms needed by Grade 5 scholarship awardees to apply for prestigious schools have been sent to the respective school principals and parents can obtain the forms from school principals by November 5.

The perfected application forms should be handed over to the principals by parents before November 10, said the Education Ministry in a press release.


Spectacles for students

The Sri Lanka Eye Donation Society has made arrangements to distribute spectacles among schoolchildren suffering from visual defects.

Those wishing to obtain spectacles may send in a self-addressed envelope with Rs. 5 stamp affixed to the General Secretary, Spectacles for Schoolchildren, Sri Lanka Eye Donation Society, Vidya Mawatha, Colombo 07 before October 29. Further particulars may be obtained from telephone numbers 011-2698040, 2698041, 2698043.


Motorcyclist dies in collision

A motorcyclist was killed and six others injured when a defender jeep collided with two vehicles in Kadawata yesterday , Police sources said.

According to these sources the jeep crashed into the motorcycle and hit a freezer truck and thereafter collided with a car.

The jeep was bound for Anuradapura from Colombo.


New techniques

The Sri Lanka Rubber Research Institute( SLRRI) will hold an exhibition and seminar in Ratnapura to make rubber cultivators aware of the application of modern technology and to improve their technical know how in the Sabaragamuwa Province.

The SLRRI hopes to introduce new cultivation techniques for a sustainable rubber cultivation and to get maximum harvest from rubber cultivation, SLRRI Director Asoka Nugawela said.

Nugawela said the rubber cultivation will be demonstrated through lectures conducted by the Institute to get high quality rubber while cutting down unnecessary expenditure.


Supermarket manager fined

Nugegoda Chief Magistrate and Additional District Judge Wasantha Jinadasa imposed a Rs. 100,000 fine on a manageress of a super market in the Pepeliyana area when she pleaded guilty to the charge of selling outdated baby cream.

The case was filed by the Investigation Officer of the Consumer Affairs Authority Under Section 30 of the Authority.

Answering Court the suspect, admitted that she had a previous conviction for the same offence.


Girl found dead in hotel pool

A eleven-year-old girl from Dehiwala died in a hotel swimming pool while on holiday with her parents yesterday.

She had gone with her parents to spend the day at a hotel in Aluthgama.

The girl was found floating in the pool at 11.30 am by the hotel staff who pulled her out of the water, the Police said. The coroner returned a verdict of death due to drowning. The Police have handed over the body to the parents. Bentota Police is investigating.

 


Illicit liquor haul Shirley Wijesinghe

Mirihana Police yesterday confiscated 1,120 bottles of illicit liquor during a raid conducted in Navagamuwa, Police said.

Two suspects in the vehicle used to transport illegal liquor have been taken into custody, sources added.


Maldives leader turns stuntman to fight climate change

Maldivian President Mohamed Nasheed, who staged the world's first underwater Cabinet meeting at the weekend, is emerging as the global stuntman in the battle against climate change.

Nasheed, 42, dived with his Cabinet to the sea bottom Saturday in an effort to press December's UN summit in Copenhagen to cap carbon emissions that cause global warming, threatening low-lying nations such as the Maldives. "We should come out of Copenhagen with a deal that will ensure that everyone will survive," said the President as he bobbed in the shimmering Indian Ocean after the meeting.

H1N1 virus: Lyceum, Nugegoda, Wattala closed

Lyceum International School has temporarily closed its Nugegoda and Wattala schools with immediate effect due to concerns of an outbreak of the H1N1 virus.

The Lyceum Nugegoda parent school has been closed till October 25, while the Lyceum Wattala branch will closed till October 21.

Lyceum International School, Nugegoda will re-open on October 26 and Wattala School will reopen on October 22.


Bodies of couple found in well were electrocuted

The couple whose bodies were recovered from a well at Hathmunawatte, Udispaththuwa have been identified as G. D. Rohana (37) and Chandima Jayaratne (20) of the same village.

At the post-mortem held, it has been found that their deaths were due to electrocution. It is further said that electric wires were strewn in certain parts of this village to trap wild pigs and this couple had accidentally walked over one of these traps which caused their deaths.

Subsequently, their bodies had allegedly been dumped into this well by some other persons.

Rangala police is conducting further investigation into the incident.
