Better treatment for rural school teachers

The Sabaragamuwa Provincial Council has decided to grant a special monthly payment from this month to principals and teachers serving in rural and very remote schools in Kegalla and Ratnapura districts.

The Council will spend nearly Rs. 1.9 million per month on this, Governor Janaka Priyantha Bandara said. In these districts, there are 273 difficult and 44 very difficult schools where nearly 2,317 teachers are serving. There are 1,419 principals serving in these schools. Accordingly a teacher attached to a difficult school will get a monthly allowance of Rs. 1,500 while his counterpart at a very difficult school will get Rs. 2,500.

Principals attached to these schools will get a payment ranging from Rs. 750 to Rs. 300 depending on this grade from this month the Governor said. However, certain political organisations have begun to launch agitational campaigns to gain political mileage in the week to come behind our moves to make these payments from this month, the Governor said.
