'Cobra' rises at the Majestic

Fights in the air, battles on the ground, chases unfolding under water, ninja fights and the destruction of the Eiffel Tower. There is variety galore in Stephen Sommers' 'G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra' with 100 minutes of pure action in the two-hour film.

A scene from the movie

From the Egyptian desert to deep below the polar ice caps, the elite G.I. JOE team uses the latest in next-generation spy and military equipment to fight the corrupt arms dealer Destro and the growing threat of the mysterious Cobra organization to prevent them from plunging the world into chaos.

In the not-too-distant future, US Army grunts Duke (Tatum) and Ripcord (Wayans) are tasked with couriering 'nanomite'-filled warheads, when they're ambushed by mysterious baddies armed with super cool hi-tech weaponry - one of them Duke's ex, Ana (Miller) - and saved by mysterious goodies with more super cool hi-tech weaponry. The goodies the Alpha Team of GI Joe, a secret international force formed for, uh, fighting baddies.

An adaptation of the 'G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero' toy franchise, this sci-fi action thriller turns out to be a solid entertainer. In the recent past, the closest parallel to 'G.I. Joe....' would perhaps be 'Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen' which released just a few weeks back.

The movie is currently screening at Majestic cinema.
