Visha's students showcase Kandyan dance

The fifth batch of students of renowned choreographer and dance instructor Visha de Silva, the head of Visha School of Dance, Dehiwala, will be presenting their maiden public dance recitals at the BMICH on October 18 at 6.30 p.m.

A line up of enchanting Kandyan dance items will be presented by 11 students of Visha's. Methsala Wijesooriya, Harshani Rupasinghe, Thilini Navaratne, Ruwini Karunaratne, Dinithi Doranagoda, D.M. Vimanthi, Sashrika Chandrasiri, Minidi Gamlath, Shehani de Alwis, Hiruni Gajanayake and Thisari Panawala will perform a variety of colourful items at the event.


The eleven students who will display their dance talents at the BMICH show

Their teacher, Visha, had played a prominent role in the local dance scene by taking Sri Lankan dance talent to foreign spheres. She had not only trained budding young dancers in local soil but had also taken some Indian students under her wings. She conducted a series of dance workshops and sessions in India and the Ninth International Children's Festival of Performing Arts in New Delhi. The event was conducted under the theme 'Imagine the World as One'.

The past pupil of Vishaka Vidyalaya, Colombo, had conducted a series of dance programs like Vana Sakuni, Mala Giraw, Nil Hiwala, Ridee Kikili and others. She had also toured countries like Denmark, Malaysia. Thailand, Maldives. Taiwan, Korea and Japan, taking Sri Lankan dance to the audience of those countries.

She had brushed up her innate talent for the art at the Institute of Aesthetic Studies, University of Kelaniya. She had also practiced the art under dance doyens Chitrasena and Vajira from the tender age of 12. She had previously taught dancing at Carey College, Colombo and is presently grooming the students of Musaeus College, Colombo. RJ
