Mesmerising wedding photography
Bhagya SENARATNE
Having started his career in photography coincidently in 1998, when
he went for a job interview, Rasanga Dissanayake has come a long way
today to become a renowned photographer.
Rasanga started first as a graphic designer. Later he was asked to
shift to photography by his then employer, having seen his experience in
photography during his school days. He states that he had not studied
the art of photography till he joined the Hegoda School of Photography
in 2008 Rasanga mastered many a technique and thereafter under Lal
Hegoda, he perceived a rapid improvement in his photography. Till then,
Rasanga has self-tutored himself on photography through the Internet and
browsing many a photography magazine. Magazines such as Explore Sri
Lanka and Business Today have published his works.

Rasanga states with a smile on his face, that his debut to Wedding
Photography was in the year 2006. Thereafter, he has come a long way and
he decided he needed to have an exhibition which is dedicated to Wedding
Photography alone. Rasanga went on to state that he has wanted to
organise a photography exhibition from the year 2006, but never really
believed it was the right time, until now.
When inquired about what it is like to be a photographer in Sri
Lanka, amongst many, and whether there is a lot of competition, Rasanga
stated that there are many photographers and wedding photographers in
this country. "However, if you have achieved a level of excellence in
what you do, then you will be seen clearly above the others" stated
Rasanga confidently.
What do you feel when you hear about photography, more specifically
wedding photography? Does your mind wonder to beautiful bridesmaids
dressed in magnificent wedding gowns or draped in elegant sarees? Do you
see in your minds eye, beautiful, picturesque landscapes? Having browsed
through Rasanga Dissanayake's wedding photographs, I felt that it was
very poetical. When inquired about this, he stated that the style of
wedding photography is primarily documentary. This is because the
photographer has to document a wedding ceremony. However, the
photographer is challenged to display continuity in his shots. He has to
convey a meaning to those that view it. Therefore, Rasanga thinks that
Wedding Photography can be challenging while at the same time he finds
it very interesting.
Rasanga hopes that everyone who comes to his photography exhibition
will be able to perceive and interpret a deeper meaning to their lives.
He hopes he would be able to bring about a change in the way people
perceive life, before they exit the Lionel Wendt Gallery. Most people
are under the impression that wedding photography is merely about
capturing people. However, if you view Rasanga's photographs, you will
definitely have a change of mind!
We have all heard that photographs change on the quality of light and
the variety of light available. This is true with regard to Rasanga's
photography. His use of light is extraordinary. Rasanga states "most of
the unusual photographs can be taken, when working in the morning." This
is because of the quality of the light, which has a blue hue, and the
manner in which the rays shine.
If you like the idea of seeing something different, something out of
the ordinary, make your way to the Lionel Wendt Art Gallery to be
mesmerised by Rasanga Dissanayake's Wedding Photography Exhibition which
will be held from October 16 to 18. |
