Student assault case:

Ten suspects granted bail

Avissawella High Court Judge Ruwan Fernando yesterday granted bail for the 10 suspects in the Nipuna Ramanayake student's assault case.

The Judge ordered the suspects including Senior SP Vas Gunawardene's wife and their son to furnish cash bail in Rs.35,000 and a bond of Rs.500,000 each with three sureties.

The Judge also directed them to produce two sureties from their family members and a third surety from the Government sector. The court also directed the suspects to appear before the Athurugiriya OIC every fortnight between 8 am to 12 noon. The court also impounded the passport of the suspects and directed the Registrar of the court to inform the Controller of Immigration and Emigration about the court order impounding the passports.

Senior Attorney Asoka Weerasooriya with Rohitha Rajapaksa appeared for the suspects.

Further hearing will be taken up today before Kaduwela Magistrate and Additional District Judge A.R. Ranaraja.
