Isuru needs help

Nine year old Isuru Laknuwan Fonseka is afflicted with a rare disease which has been diagnosed by Dambulla Base Hospital Consultant Paediatrician Dr. (Mrs) Wasantha Vithana as 'Duchennes Muscular Dystrophy'. This has been confirmed in the report by Anuradhapura Base Hospital Consultant Pathologist Dr. (Mrs) Priyanka Abeygunasekera. Isuru Laknuwan is one of 36 patients in the world with 'Duchennes Muscular Dystrophy'.

Isuru's parents are poor and have almost spent their entire life savings to try and cure their son.

The father is a pressure heart patient and he had to give up his job to be by his sons bedside.

The mother cooks at a nearby mill to keep the home fires burning. The schooling of Isuru's two siblings have also been hampered due to grave financial difficulties.

Minister to attend seminar in Bhutan

Indigenous Medicine Minister Tissa Karaliyadda left for Bhutan on Saturday to attend a seminar on stabilisation of democracy in the Asian region.

The seminar jointly organised by UN and the Government of Bhutan is due to conclude on October 15.


Muthuhettigama at it again

UPFA Galle district candidate Nishantha Muthuhettigama has allegedly threatened Galle District Returning Officer and District Secretary Asoka Jayasekara over the phone regarding an alleged flaw in his aggregate preferential vote and thereby stopping his emergence at the top of the list in the district at the October 10 Southern Provincial election.

The Galle district returning officer has lodged a complaint on the incident with the Galle police for his future security in respect of which the Galle police have recorded a statement from Jayasekara on the alleged telephone call at the Galle District Secretariat. The Galle police are carrying out further investigations.


Buddhist discussion

The next Buddhist public panel discussion of the Colombo YMBA will be held on Sunday, October 18 at 10 a.m. at its Borella building on the theme ‘Buddhism and Sexual Misconduct’. The panellists are U. Mapa and Indika Perera with Rajah Kuruppu as moderator.


Buddhist talk

Prof. Raja De Alwis will deliver a public Buddhist talk in English on ‘Meditation Practice in daily life’ at the meeting of the Servants of the Buddha Society on Saturday, October 17 at 4.30 p.m. at the Maitri Hall, Lauries Road, Bambalapitiya.


Seminar

The Sri Lanka - China Friendship Association will conduct a seminar to mark the 60th anniversary of the Chinese Revolution, at the Sri Lanka Foundation Institute on October 14 at 3.00 p.m. The keynote address at the seminar, on the three decades of economic reforms in China will be delivered by SLFP Organiser for the Ratnapura district, journalist Karunaratna Paranavithana.

The Association of Muslim Women Professionals and Entrepreneurs are organizing their Fund Raising Show “Morning Glory” on October 24 at the Mount Lavinia Hotel from 9.30 a.m. onwards.

The Chemistry Department of the Open University of Sri Lanka in association with its Buckyball Society is holding the Professor J. N. Oleap Fernando farewell symposium on Wednesday, October 14 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Open University Auditorium at Nawala.

Ratnapura PS member dies in accident

Ratnapura Pradeshiya Sabha UPFA member Janaka Kaluarachchi died when a lorry he was driving ran off the road and hurtled down a 20 foot precipice along the Ratnapura-Sirinagama road on Sunday night.

Kaluarachchi who was critically injured in the accident was pronounced dead on admission to Gilimale hospital.


Schoolgirl dies in crash

A schoolgirl travelling in a trishaw and a pillion rider died on admission to General hospital, Chilaw in a three-wheeler and motor bicycle collision. The accident occurred at Galmuruwa on the Kuliyapitiya-Madampe road. The girl who succumbed to injuries is a student of Senanayake Central College, Madampe. Madampe police are investigating.


TN delegation visits Norwood

As part of their visit to Sri Lanka, the Parliamentary delegation from Tamil Nadu State arrived at the Norwood Thondaman International Esplanade by a Sri Lankan Air Force helicopter around 10 am yesterday (12).

Minister Arumugam Thondaman, accompanied by Deputy Ministers Muttu Sivalingam. S. Jegadeeswaran and the Hatton-Dickoya UC Chairman Dr. A. Nandakumar took them around the Norwood Esplanade and the Thondaman Vocational Training Centre in Hatton and briefed about their functions.


Drug eradication program

The drug eradication program has been intensified in the Batticaloa district with the patronage of the non-governmental organizations. The Swiss Contact Organization conducted a drug eradication awareness program at Thiraimadu resettled village in the district.

Street dramas and concerts were also held by the volunteers of the organizations.


Sri Lanka’s popularity soars in UK

Sri Lanka’s popularity has soared among those in the UK, according to the Sri Lanka Tourist Promotion Bureau. The country has seen a 16.9 percent rise in tourist arrivals in August of this year in comparison to the same period in 2008.

Sri Lanka saw the highest number of British tourists in 2009 flock to the country this August, with an increase of more than 1,000 visitors when compared to the same month last year.

UK Director of Tourism, Sanjika Perera said it was great to see people have renewed faith in the safety of the country and the value for money it offers.
