Niluka and Thilini clinch Mercantile shuttle titles

Niluka Karunaratne of Seylan Bank and Thilini Jayasinghe of Sampath Bank clinched the Men’s and Women’s Singles in the Mercantile Open Badminton Championship organised by Mercantile Badminton Association which concluded at S. Thomas’College stadium, Mount Lavinia yesterday.

Olympian Thilini Jayasinghe beat Renu Chandrika de Silva of Seylan Bank by 20/22, 23/21 and 21/9 in the Women’s Singles final.

Meanwhile Niluka Karunaratne bagged a triple crown by winning the Men’s Singles by beating his brother Diluka Karunaratne of Seylan Bank by 21/16, 21/13 and he also bagged the Men’s Doubles by partnering Diluka Karunaratne to beat Dinuka and Aushka Lakshan by 21/11, 21/15. Niluka won the Mixed Double’s with Chandrika de Silva beating Thilini Jayasinghe and Hasitha Chanaka by 21/16 and 21/12.

Seylan Bank emerged overall champions while HNB finished runner-up. Sehan Rajapaksa, Marketing Manager of Akzonobil was the Chief Guest.

Masters Doubles

Ajith Wijesinghe and W.M. Ariyasena (Holcim) beat Rohan de Silva and Mohan Wijesinghe (McLarens) by 24/26, 21/16, 21/19.

Women’s Veterans singles

K.T. Thushari (David Pieris Motor Co.) beat V. Murugesu (Airport and Aviation) by 21/6, 21/3.

Womens Veterans Doubles

K.T. Thushari (Devid Piris Motor Company) and Thushani (Janashakthi) beat V. Samarakkody and Schafter (Janashkthi) by 21/13, 21/12.

Men’s Veternas Singles

Clarance Homer (Jaison Sports) beat Anoj Thilakarathne (Durga) by 21/14, 21/9.

Men’s Veterans Doubles

Amanda Weerasinghe (Alma) and Clarance Homer (Jason Sports) beat Anoj Thilakarathna (Durga) and Hafig Cader (AMW) by 17/21, 21/10, 21/18.

Women’s Doubles

Chandrika de Silva and Pameesha Dishanthi (Seylan) beat Thilini Jayasinghe (Sampath Bank) and Soraya Mizkin (HSBC).

Men’s Plate

Amila Kalugalage (Sampath Bank) beat Lahiru Kodithuwakku by 21/13, 21/13 (Nations Trust Bank).

Women’s Plate
