The Asian - German Sports Exchange program has joined hands with Tharunyata Hetak Foundation to conduct the Youth Beach Sports Feasta 2009. The Beach Sports program comprise of four sports disciplines - Beach Volleyball, Beach Rugby, Beach Football and Beach Cricket, said Dietmer Doering the head of the (AGSEP). The sports will be conducted at Aquarius Beach Resort in Marawila. These details were disclosed to the media at a press briefing held at Sema House, the head office of the Tharunyata Hetak Foundation.

Doering said the first program to be conducted will be the Beach soccer on October 3 and 4 from 9.00 a.m. to 9.00 p.m. and the mercantile beach soccer from October 10 to 12 at the same venue. This will be followed by Beach Cricket on October 17, 18 and 24, 25.

He added that though people in Sri Lanka play cricket on beaches they never played on a competitive basis. In cricket playing countries Australia and New Zealand it is highly popular. This has become very popular among tourists in those countries. We decided to introduce this on a competitive basis to attract more people to the beaches of Sri Lanka. The country is surrounded by sea but in Sri Lanka we are not making the maximum use of these beaches. With the introduction of this popular sport we can be sure the whole country will get involved.

At present with peace prevailing throughout the country we hope to take this program to other parts of the country especially to the Eastern Province.

Tharunyata Hetak Foundation from its inception has been in the forefront giving an opportunity to the youth of this country to achieve the best in sports. This prompted us to join this organisation to hold this kind of festival. We also hope to make this event an annual event while doing so we are planning to make it a national event, an international program which could help the country to gain its confidence as well as to help the youth of this country to face foreign competition in these beach sports.

Doering added that cricket will be a six-a-side tourney and rugby will be a sevens tourney. For Beach Volleyball there will be four courts while the soccer and cricket will be played on a single area while the rugby sevens will be confined to a single day. The rugby tournament is scheduled for October 31.

Meanwhile Beach Volleyball Tourney is scheduled for the month of November for which the dates are yet to be finalised. He said that Beach VB is sure to attract a large number of entries.
