The artifacts unearthed and examined by experts both local and
foreign have revealed that the island’s history goes back to over
10,000 years. These include the period of the legendary Rama and

Sri Lanka ageing faster:
Sri Lanka ranks as a country with a rapidly
ageing population. Life expectancy, which was 46 years in 1946,
increased to 70 years in 1981, then to 74 years in 2005 and is
expected to rise up to 80 years within the next 2 decades. This
dramatic demographic transmission has created changes in the
population age structure.

Despite difficult fiscal situation:
Government continues welfare projects
The overall public expenditure of the Government
for the first four months of 2009 stood at Rs.389,788 million which
constituted of Rs.308,416 million of recurrent expenditure and
Rs.81,372 of capital expenditure, according to the Mid Year Fiscal
Position Report 2009.
