UN Summit on climate change
UN: UN chief Ban Ki-moon is ready to organize a summit meeting on
climate change ahead of an already planned session in Copenhagen in
December, a senior UN official said Wednesday.
“The secretary general is prepared to convene such a meeting again if
desired,” said Janoz Pasztor, director of the secretary general’s
climate change support team. The idea was proposed Tuesday during a
dinner given by Ban for 33 heads of state or government.
“They were 33 leaders who met for the dinner. It may look like
something of that size,” Pasztor said. “The secretary general will
consult on that issue to see what appetite exists for such a meeting.”
Ban said earlier that the “political momentum” had moved towards sealing
a deal on climate change in Copenhagen.
World leaders at the United Nations “came to that conclusion that
(this issue) will not be completed at the technical track. This is a
geostrategic issue,” said Ban’s advisor Robert Orr. Thursday, AFP |
