SAARC project to set up Seed Testing Laboratory

The Cabinet has approved a memorandum submitted by Agriculture Development and Agrarian Services Minister Maithreepala Sirisena to set up a seed testing laboratory under the SAARC project. A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between India and Sri Lanka will be signed to this effect.

It has been decided that India would assist setting up of seed testing laboratories in the SAARC member states, including Sri Lanka.

The Indian Government would provide equipment for the laboratory costing about INR 7.7 million to Sri Lanka, including equipment for DNA finger printing,

The building for laboratory and staff would have to be provided by Sri Lanka. For which a suitable building has already been identified.


Amending the Municipal Councils Ordinance, Urban Councils Ordinance and Pradeshiya Sabhas Act

The Cabinet has approved to a memorandum submitted by Local Government and Provincial Councils Minister Janaka Bandara Tennakoon to refer the Municipal Councils Ordinance, Urban Councils Ordinance and Pradeshiya Sabhas draft Amendment Act to the Legal Draftman and to advice to draft the final.


Rehabilitate Jaffna Lagoon scheme and award of civil work

The Cabinet has approved a memorandum submitted by Construction and Engineering Services Minister Rajitha Senarathna to rehabilitate Jaffna Lagoon scheme balance work at Thondamanaru barrage and rehabilitation of Ariyale barrage, kapoothu bund and other 13 earth bunds and to award civil work of the State Development and Construction Corporation with mechanical work to Government Factory.

A proposal was made long time ago to convert three lagoons into fresh water lakes by constructing barrages and bunds whenever necessary.

It is expected to award the civil work to State Development and Construction Corporation at the estimated cost of Rupees Sixty Five Million and Sixty One Thousand Seven Hundred and Forty Two and Cents Thirty Four (Rs. 65,061,742.34) including 12% Value Added Tax and 3% National Building Tax, Award the Mechanical works to Government Factory at the estimated cost of Rupees Seventy Two Million Six Hundred and Eighty Three Thousand and Seven Hundred and Seventy Two only (Rs. 72,683,772.00) including 12% Value Added Tax and 3% National Building Tax and to pay advance payments to State Development and Construction Corporation and Government Factory at 30% of the contract sum.


Moneragala District Hospital under Central Government

The Cabinet has approved a memorandum submitted by Healthcare and Nutrition Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva to acquire Moneragala District Hospital under the Central Government accordingly, the acquisition will be effective from October 1.


Development of playgrounds at Haliyadda, Naranvita and Mulgama

The Cabinet has approved a memorandum submitted by Plantation Industries Minister D.M. Jayaratna to publish a Gazette Notification by the Ministry of Sports declaring that Haliyadda, Naranvita and Mulgama lands of the Divisional Secretary's Division, Doluwa in Kandy allocated for the playground as per plans.

The aim of this move is to develop proper playgrounds in order to improve sports skills of the youth living in the said areas.
