Thilini, Dinuka secure singles titles

Thilini Jayasinghe regained her supremacy in Sri Lankan badminton beating her doubles partner in the same tournament, Achini Ratnasiri in an easy two setter (21-9, 21-12) in the open women’s final of the Nationalized Services Open Badminton Championships which concluded at the S. Thomas’ College Sports Complex yesterday.

Ratnasiri had beaten Jayasinghe at the Badminton Nationals earlier this year. On her way to the final, Jayasinghe trounced the National Champion Chandrika de Silva 21-15, 10-21, 21-15 in the semi final.

Dinuka Karunaratne won the men’s title after a beautiful show at the court, beating Nuwan Hettiarachchi 21-14, 18-21, 21-14.

The much fancied Karunaratne brothers failed to maintain their supremacy in the men’s doubles. Their opponents Kasun Ratnayake and Manjula Fernando duo spoke with their racquets to down the brothers 14-21, 21-17, 24-22. The tournament was sponsored by Sri Lanka Telecom.

Final Results: Girls: Omal Dharmawardena beat Rakitha Perera 21-17, 22-24, 21-08

Women’s doubles: Thilini Jayasinghe, Achini Ratnasiri beat Subodha Dahanayake, Gayani Perera 25-23, 21-14

Mixed Doubles: Upuli Samanthika, R.S. Kasun beat Sushmitha Illangakoon, Dilshan Kariyawasam 17-21, 22-20, 22-20.

Men’s Veteran’s Singles: Kamal Gamlath beat Clarance Homer 11/4, W/O

Men’s Veteran’s Doubles: Darshana Senarathna, Kamal Gamlath beat Clarance Homor, A. Thillakaratne 21-15, 13-21, 21-16.

Veteran’s Mixed Doubles: Kamal Gamlath, Nilanthi beat Darshana Senaratne, Upuli 25-23, 21-11.

Masters Singles: Lakshman Joseph beat P. Basnayake 22-20, 21-15.

Masters Doubles: N.Gunasiri, P. Basnayake beat Ariyasena, Bonso 21-19, 15-21, 22-20.
