Government allocates Rs. 142 billion for defence affairs

Minister Dinesh Gunawardene told Parliament yesterday the Government has
allocated over Rs. 142,144 million for defence affairs for 2009.

A document tabled by the Minister in response to an oral question
raised by JVP MP Premasiri Manage said there is no separate
classification as war expenditure of Government and it was a
humanitarian operation which was concluded recently.
Asked to inform the House the main sources from which that money is
expected to be obtained, the Minister said funds will be obtained from
domestic funds.
The amount of expected revenue through the Nation Building Tax for
defence affairs this year is Rs. 32,000 million.
The Defence, Public Security, Law and Order Ministry is dealing with
the public security, peace and order of the country as well. Accordingly
expenditure pertaining to three armed forces is categorised as
expenditure for defence while the expenditure of Police and Civil
Security Force is categorised as expenditure on security, peace and
order of the whole country, the Minister said. |
