Pension payments to be increased - Dr Amunugama

Anomalies to be rectified annually:

Dr. Amunugama

Public Administration and Home Affairs Minister Dr. Sarath Amunugama told Parliament yesterday that the Government will increase pension payments simultaneously as they increase public servants' salaries.

He said there are 450,000 pensioners who had rendered a yeoman service to the country. "Our public sector ratio is very high compared to other countries," he said.

On a pledge given by the Government pension payment anomalies have been rectified in 1995, 1997 and 2006. Pensioners now receive a substantial pension schemes, he said. But the problem is when a salary hike is granted, pension payment anomalies would occur. Therefore, anomalies have to be rectified annually, the Minister said.
