Selling of paddy stocks utilising Government provision

The Cabinet has approved a memorandum submitted by Agriculture Development and Agrarian Services Minister Maithripala Sirisena to sell 15,000 MT of Nadu variety of paddy belonged to the 'Maha' season of 2008/2009 now lying at Paddy Marketing Board (PMB) stores and to fix selling price at Rs. 33 per 1 kg of paddy in the open market.

Nearly 44,000 MT of paddy - Samba and Nadu purchased by the PMB during Maha season of 2008/2009 and Yala Season of 2009 have been stored as security stocks covering all zones.

Construction of a new building for Matara District Officers of Motor Traffic

The Cabinet has approved a memorandum submitted by Transport Minister Dullas Alahapperuma to construct a new building for Matara district officers of motor traffic and to assigning the construction project to Central Engineering Consultancy Bureau on the below mentioned estimate without following the normal tender procedure.

1st Phase - cost estimate Rs. 15,083,662.20. 2nd Phase - cost estimate Rs. 12,133,068.80. 3rd Phase - cost estimate Rs. 17,764,145.19.

The total estimated cost for the construction is Rs. 44,024,204.99

Engagement of CECB as the Design and Build Contractor for construction project of Sabaragamuwa University

The Cabinet has approved a memorandum submitted by Higher Education Minister W.A. Wishwa Warnapala to award the construction project of Sabaragamuwa University to the Central Engineering Consultancy Bureau (CECB) on Design and Build (Measure and pay) basis to construct a hostel building for 240 students.

The estimated cost will be Rs. 175.68 million. Also a building complex for the Faculty of Applied Sciences at a estimated cost of Rs. 296 million and to development of a playground and a pavilion at Rs. 121 million.

Allocation of land at St. Sebastian hill, Hulftsdorp to Colombo Bar Association for a Modern Office Complex for Lawyers

The Cabinet has approved a memorandum submitted by Urban Development and Sacred Area Development Minister Dinesh Gunewardena to allocate the land in extent of 0A-2R-26.94p. Depicted as lots 1, & 2 in plan No. 1347 date 06.08.2002 made by K.P Chandrasekara, Licensed Surveyor, to the Sri Lanka Bar Association to put up a modern office Complex for Lawyers at Hulftsdorp on long term lease basis, to cancel the present lease granted for the said car park and to get the physical possession of the Cafeteria building from Sri Lanka Army.

Product quality certification of tea

The Cabinet has approved a joint memorandum submitted by Plantation Industries Minister D.M. Jayarathne and the Science and Technology Minister Prof. Tissa Vitarana to launch the product Quality Certification of Tea.

The Sri Lanka Tea Board to join hands with the Sri Lanka Standards Institution (SLSI) to launch the product Quality Certification of Tea.

In addition to the product Quality Certification scheme prevailed under proposed certification the SLTB and SLSI have taken action on the requirements Maximum residue levels of pesticides in tea to be included into the certification process.

Amendment to the Licensing of Shipping Agents Act no 10 of 1972

The Cabinet has approved a memorandum submitted by Ports and Aviation Minister Chamal Rajapaksa to instruct the legal draftsman to make consequential amendments to instruct the legal draftsman to amend the Licensing of shopping Agents Act No. 10 of 1972 to address the following requirements, by incorporating suitable provisions to empower the Minister in charge of the subject of shipping.

To regulate fees charged by the sectors coming under the purview of the said Act, To stipulate minimum standards for financial responsibility and operational viability of the respective sector coming under the purview of the said Act, To specify minimum standards for financial responsibility and operational viability of the respective sectors coming under the purview of the said Act, and to instruct the legal draftsman to make consequential amendments.
