Cuba stops import of methyl bromide
Cuba: Cuba eliminated the import of methyl bromide and chloride
fluorocarbons (CFCs), thus contributing to protect the ozone layer and
comply with agreements of the Montreal Protocol, Cuban News Agency
reported.
Director of the Technical Ozone Office of the Ministry of Science,
Technology and Environment, Nelson Espinosa, said that the program for
preservation of the shield protecting the planet against the sun's
ultraviolet rays was accomplished earlier than scheduled. He said that
the strategy, the most significant result in the last few years,
constitutes an important contribution to world health and environment.
The document, which controls nearly 100 substances that weaken the
ozone layer, was signed by 24 nations in September 16 and currently
includes 195 states under the United Nations Environment Program.
