Gang robs ar hero’s house

A gang of robbers that entered a house of a disabled Army person at Gomila in Mawarala stole jewellery, electric generator and several other items amounting to Rs. 108,000.

The robbers had entered the house at night by removing tiles of the roof, police said.

The Mawarala Crime Detective Branch is investigating on the special instructions of Mawarala Police OIC W.T. Pushpakumara.


Man who duped girls remanded

Panadura Magistrate Thusara Rajasinghe remanded a person who duped girls promising employment as TV and radio announcers and obtained sexual favours, till tomorrow, pending investigations. Wadduwa police arrested the suspect in a house at Morontuduwa area. The arrest was made following a complaint made to Wadduwa police by a girl alleged to have been abused by the suspect.

Police traced forged documents typed on the letter heads of several television stations with him.

Sgt. Sugath of Wadduwa police produced the suspect before Court.


New officers for Northern Province

Northern Province Governor, Major General G.A. Chandrasiri, handed over appointment letters to 30 newly recruited government officers for Northern Province service under four categories.

The ceremony was held at the Northern Province Head Office in Varothayanagar, Trincomalee.

The Provincial Public Service Commission has selected the officers from Kilinochchi, Mullaitivu, Mannar and Vavuniya districts.


Village development

The Mancholai village in Kalkudah has been selected to be developed on the initiative of Disaster Relief Services Minister M. S. S. Ameer Ali.

The World Bank has allocated funds for this.

Loans were given to 50 families for self-employment as an initial step, sources said.


Special program at Nawala mosque

A Lailathul Qudur program has been arranged by the Al-Masjidul Badriyeen - Nawala Jummah Mosque Jayewardenepura, Rajagiriya.

Special arrangements have been made by M. H. Abu Haniffa, the Chief Trustee of the Mosque and the program will start at 9.00 p.m. Isha prayers will be conducted by Mowlavi M. S. M. Mansoor (Khaleefathush Shazuly).

9.15 p.m. Tharaveeh prayers will be conducted by Hanif Asrar and Hafiz M. M. Fashan and 11.15 p.m. Thasheeh prayers will be conducted by Mowlavi M.B.M. Mubarak (Falahi).

The religious lectures will be delivered by Ashsheikh Dr. P. C. Pakkeer Jaufar at 12.00 midnight. And Vithr prayers by Mowlavi M. T. Hilurudeen (Falahi) at about 12.45 a.m.

Rathibathul Jalaliya, Halara Majlis will be followed by about 1.00 a.m. by Mowlavi M. S. M. Mansoor (Khaleefathush Shazuly).

Thawba, Duwa and Salawath by Mowlavi S.M.M. Thalha (Bari) by 1.45 a.m.


Petition seeks legal action

A petition to be signed by one million people calling for strong legal action against former Gampaha SP Luxman Cooray for his alleged involvement in the assassination of former Minister Jeyaraj Fernandopulle was launched in Katana yesterday.

Katana SLFP Chief Organiser Dr. Sudarshanee Fernandopulle signed the petition on the first person.

As a sequel to this move, a resolution calling upon the President to take legal action against this SP over the alleged assassination was also passed at the Katana SLFP Central Committee meeting held yesterday. Another resolution condemning the JVP statement in Parliament charging that the Government is hushing up the Jeyaraj assassination incident was also passed at this meeting.


Ed-ul-Fitr festival prayers

The Ed-ul-Fitr festival prayers by the Memon Association of Sri Lanka will be held at 8.15 a.m. on September 21 at the Colombo Municipal Ground, (Race Course).


Protest against - Channel 4

The Joint Free Media Alliance will stage a protest against the Channel 4 TV London, opposite the Colombo Fort Railway Station on Wednesday.

The protest invites patriotic individuals and organizations to defeat future efforts of anti-national forces in defaming the country, Alliance Secretary Ajith Jayasundara said.

The organizers will get the participants to sign a protest letter and hand it over to the British High Commissioner in Colombo after the demonstration, he said.


First appointment of agents

A network of coconut shells and husk collectors in Sri Lanka formed by the Coconut Development Authority will hold its first appointment of agents today at 10 a.m. at the Post Office Auditorium, Kandy.

The network will help the industry in collecting coconut shells and husk that are otherwise discarded, Coconut Development Authority, Chairman Keerthi Sri Weerasinghe said.

He said the network will help increase the collection of coconut shells from 1,200 million to 2, 400 million in one year. Five factories of activated-carbon will be set up in various regions to add to the national export, he said.

Sadiv Roo - 2009 a photographic exhibition organized by the Yatha Roo Photographic Association of Panadura Balika Maha Vidyalaya will be held today at 9.00 a.m. at the College Subhavi hall under former MP Thilak Karunarathne’s patronage.

The event is sponsored by Thambapanni periodical and the Sri Lanka staff of the Emirates. Winners will be awarded prizes and certificates.
