President's Gold Cup VB commences

The Volleyball Federation of Sri Lanka organised championship for the President's Gold Cup commences today. The championship is sponsored by Dialog Telekom Ltd for the fifth successive year.

The official commencement of the tournament is scheduled to be held at Galle Fort courts, starting at 9.30 a.m. with Minister Piyasena Gamage as chief guest, while the President of the SLVBF Dilan Perera and Manager, Marketing and Sports Promotions Chirantha de Zoysa as guests of honour. The winners and the two runners-up of district tournaments will qualify to play in the provincial tournament which will be conducted from October 10-11 and 17-18.

The final stage of the championship this year will be played in the outstations. The winner and runner-up of the provincial tourney make their way to the national level tourney with matches are to be played in Madampe and Beruwala.

The highlight this year will be that the conducting of district tourney and the provincial tourney for the Northern Province in Jaffna. The dates fixed for these matches are September 26 and 27.

Sixteen men's and 16 women's teams will make it to the final stage the national level from the Provincial tournament.

The tournament will see its closure in mid November according to reliable source available from the SLVBF.
