Australian envoy visits Batticaloa
M.I. Farook Batticaloa District Group Corre.
The Australian Government has sanctioned aid to develop Batticaloa
district.
In order to learn the current situation of the district the Deputy
High Commissioner of the Australian Embassy in Colombo Sofia McIntyre
visited Batticaloa.
The Deputy High Commissioner met people's representatives in the
district and learnt about the development projects implemented in the
area.
Scholarship Foundation awards
The Awards Ceremony of Parents Memorial Scholarship Foundation will
be held on September 13 at the Foundation premises at 392/2, Perera
Mawatha, Kotuwegoda, Rajagiriya. Forty economically disadvantaged
students selected islandwide covering 16 districts and 11 universities
in the faculties of Medicine, Engineering, Management and Law (including
Science, Maths, Commerce and Arts) irrespective of any differences are
entitled to these scholarships. They will be granted Rs. 1,000 per month
during the first year of their university studies for a period of 12
months continuously. At this ceremony which is presided by Venerable Dr.
Mirisse Dhammika, the book Daridrathawa Hambayayi written on moral
virtues by Kiriwattuduwage Seetha Nandanie Goonetilleke is also to be
presented.
A musical of hope
"Lift up your eyes", a musical of hope, will be presented by the
Choir of St. Francis of Assisi, Mount Lavinia on Sunday, September 13 at
6.00 p.m. at the Church of St. Francis of Assisi, 80, Hotel Road, Mount
Lavinia and on Saturday, September 26 at 5.30 p.m. at the Trinity
Chapel, Trinity College, Kandy. Entrance free.
Agreement signing ceremony
An agreement twinning Youshu Municipality in the Hanan Province in
China with the Nuwara Eliya Municipal Council as brotherhood cities will
be signed at Nuwara Eliya today.
The signatories will be Youshu Mayor Gong Wu Shu and Nuwara Eliya
Mayor Chandana Lal Karunaratne.
This is a sequence to a recent visit to China by Central Province
Governor Tikiri Kobbekaduwa.
Visit to Shilpa Lama Niwasaya
Members of the Royal College Past Teachers' Association will visit
Shilpa Lama Niwasaya, Nawala Road, Narahenpita tomorrow with pens,
pencils, erasers, exercise and CR books, story books, novels, magazines,
soap, powder and other items.
The Home shelters 46 parentless schoolgoing children. The Association
and a past student will meet the cost of the meals of the Home on that
day.
S and D Associates in Ramsi Gardens, Nawala Road, Narahenpita, will
donate toilet disinfectant worth over Rs. 5,000 to the Home.
Productivity award ceremony
The Provincial productivity award ceremony for the Sabaragamuwa,
North Western and Uva provinces organized by the National Productivity
Secretariat will be held today at St. Joseph's Primary Girl's School,
Kegalle.
Emergency passed
The Motion to extend Emergency was passed in Parliament yesterday by
a majority of 87 votes with 100 voting for and 13 against.
The JHU, NFF and CWC voted with the Government while the TNA voted
against. The UNP was absent at the time of voting. JVP MPs walked out of
the Chambers when the voting commenced.
Forged note racket:
Three arrested
North Central Province Corr.
Three suspects taken into custody by the Kekirawa Police in
connection with the detection of forged currency notes in a house in
Kekirawa were produced before the Kekirawa Magistrate Srimath Wijesekera
and remanded till September 23.
The three suspects all women were arrested following the detection of
227 forged Rs. 2000 notes, 56 forged Rs. 1000 notes and several other
items used in the forgery during a raid conducted by police on September
9.
NGO payroll robbed
Rafik JALALDEEN
A suspect fled with a payroll of over Rs.1.2 million belonging to an
NGO staff in Kinniya, Trincomalee on Wednesday morning.
Police spokesman Senior DIG Nimal Mediwake said an employee of a
Bangladesh funded NGO operating in Trincomalee was robbed by an unknown
suspect in Kinniya around 10.30am.
Help save her life
Hewa Heenpallage Renuka Shyamalee of 113/A, Kaththota, Nittambuwa is
suffering from Atrial Septal Defect (heart disease) and the
Cardiothoracic Surgeon Dr. Y. K. M. Lahie has recommended a surgery to
cure this disease. The estimated cost of the surgery is around Rs.
320,000.
This family with two children says they do not have a permanent
income and finds it extremely difficult to meet the surgical costs.
They request public to contribute to this needy cause by sending this
donations to account number 278-2-001-2-0010437 at the People's Bank,
Nittambuwa branch.
