'Mahaweli Week' begins on Sept 14
Mahaweli Week will be held in all Mahaweli Systems from September 14
to 20 to mark the development achieved from the Mahaweli Development
Program.
The Mahaweli Authority of Sri Lanka has organised the Mahaweli Week
under the direction of Agriculture Development and Agrarian Services
Minister Maithripala Sirisena.
Thousands of farmers who have settled in the Mahaweli areas will
participate in the Mahaweli Week activities. The Mahaweli Authority of
Sri Lanka has made arrangements to commence the Mahaweli Week by naming
September 14 as the Religious Day and the culmination of events of the
Mahaweli Week will be marked by a farmers rally and closing ceremony
organised at Angunakolapellessa, Walawe Mahaweli Special Area with
10,000 farmers' participation on September 20.
The Social Welfare Day will be on September 15 whilst September 16
will be the Productivity Day.
Arrangements have also been made to clean and renovate the canals and
drains in the Mahaweli areas by a shramadana organised with the
participation of thousands of farmers of the Mahaweli systems on
September 17 which has been named as the Irrigation Day.
Growing homesteads under the Api Wawamu Rata Nagamu program and a
field agricultural day will be the highlights of the Agricultural Day on
September 18.
September 19 will be the Education and Cultural Day of the Mahaweli
Week. Special events have been organised for schoolchildren in the
Mahaweli areas on this day, whilst cultural activities to enhance the
cultural heritage have also been organised by the Mahaweli Authority of
Sri Lanka.
