Gully bowsers for local bodies

Gully bowsers valued at Rs. 154 million were distributed among local
government bodies by the Local Government and Provincial Councils
Ministry for the disposal of sewerage.
Since problems of sanitation in many areas had arisen as a number of
local bodies do not have the facilities of sewerage disposal, the
Ministry had taken this step, Local Government and Provincial Councils
Minister Janaka Bandara Tennekoon said at a function held to distribute
the vehicles recently.
The Minister also said a study was being made by the Centre for Solid
Waste Management set up at the Ministry to ascertain and resolve the
solid waste disposal problem by local bodies, 72 selected local bodies
were brought under the survey by the centre.
The Minister said the gully bowser was given to the Katana Pradeshiya
Sabha, the hometown of the late Chief Government Whip and Highways
Minister Jeyaraj Fernandopulle, on a request made by the widow of the
Minister Dr. Sudarshanie Fernandopulle, SLFP organizer , Katana and the
second bowser was given to the Kalutara Pradeshiya Sabha which was
administered by the Opposition as there was no party or political
consideration in the distribution of assets in the local government
administration.
