Red Cross National Youth meet next month

The fifth annual Red Cross National Youth Sports Festival is scheduled to be held on September 11, 12 and 13 at Sugathadasa stadium. The organisers expect over 1200 athletes to participate in this annual event. According to them this is an opportunity given to the Youth of the Red Cross to show their talents and to proceed to achieve national and international levels in sport.

This event commenced soon after the 2004 tsunami with the sole intention of helping the tsunami effected children and was held in Matara. But later with interest shown by everyone the Red Cross thought it fitting to continue with the event for benefit of the youth involved with the organisation.

The competitors for the final meet made their way after competing in he Disatrict levl meets which was considered as qualifying rounds.

The events conducted for age groups under 16,18, 20 and 23. This year the highlight will be the participation of Sri Lanka’s junior sprinter Shehan Ambepitiya and Shamilasi Jayasinghe the sister of Olympic medalist Susanthika Jayasinghe
