Brazil to attend creation of AMERIPOL
Brazil: President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva approved on
Thursday his country's participation in debates to make official the
creation of the Community of Police Officers of America (AMERIPOL),
which is to act similarly to INTERPOL.
While announcing his country's joining the creation of AMERIPOL,
under discussion since 2007, Justice Minister Tarso Genro said the
entity is expected to contribute to improve collaboration among police
bodies in the continent.
After saying AMERIPOL will not compete with INTERPOL, Genro added
that the projected institution will give special attention to the
integration work of law enforcement bodies in Latin America.
He announced that representatives of countries attending discussions
for the formal creation of AMERIPOL will meet in Brasilia on the
sidelines of the first National Conference of Public Security, starting
today in the presence of President Lula.
In 2007, representatives from 21 countries of the continent met in
Bogota, Colombia, to discuss the creation of AMERIPOL, the main
objective of which would be to fight drug trafficking, illicit arms
trade and human trafficking. Brasilia, Prensa Latina |
