Desert Cubs play matches in Lanka
A team of cricketers who had not seen Sri Lanka though they were born
as Sri Lankans visited Colombo and Kandy to play a series of cricket
matches in Sri Lanka.
The team 'Desert Cubs' consists of 40 members and 110 parents,
accompanied them. The first match was played at Lyceum College, Nugegoda
for the Alison Silva Championship shield. Then they played two matches
at the Lionel Mendis Academy and visited Kandy to play two matches
against Trinity College and two games against St. Anthony's College,
Kandy.
The 'Desert Cubs' cricket team is from UAE. This team was looking
forward for the trip to Sri Lanka after the defeat of terrorism. The Co-ordinator
is Amazing Sri Lanka Holidays Managing Director Lionel Perera and the
Manager of the team is Keerthi de Silva.
The team was not much interested in playing many matches, but were
keen to help needy cricket players and also Ranaviru families. A
donation of rupees two lakhs towards Ranaviru families was made to Anoma
Rajapaksa and a donation of one and a half lakhs of rupees was made to
Kushil Gunasekara Foundation for children.
George Hettiarachchi of the Desert Cub Academy said that they learnt
that the country was free from terrorism when they left UAE.
