CEB strike a flop

The strike called by some trade unions at the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) was an utter failure. There are 50 Trade Unions but only nine trade unions took part in yesterday's strike, CEB Chairman E.A.S.K. Edirisinghe told the Daily News yesterday evening.

Most employees had rejected the call to strike and reported for work to cooperate with the Government's development plan to continue the electricity supply uninterrupted, the CEB Chairman said.

Co-Laureate, 2007 Nobel Prize for Peace and Vice Chair, UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change IPCC-AR Professor Mohan Munasinghe exchanging greetings with former UK Prime Minister, Tony Blair. Professor Munasinghe and Mr. Blair were the two plenary keynote speakers recently at Eco-forum 2009 in China, where they briefed senior Chinese Ministers and government officials on climate change and sustainable development. Prof. Munasinghe is also Chairman, Munasinghe Institute for Development (MIND), Sri Lanka, and Director-General, Sustainable Consumption Institute (SCI), University of Manchester, UK.


 

Frock strangles girl in sleep

A 13-year-old girl died when the dress she was wearing strangled her neck while sleeping.

The tragic incident took place at Gampola-Ambagamuwa area last Sunday.

The victim is identified as Jeganathan Nanduja.


Rescue mission to save vessel

Fisheries and Aquatic Minister Felix Perera has taken action to rescue the fishing vessel which faced an accident 200 nautical miles away from the Tangalle shore.

This vessel Wega carrying five fishermen, had left Tangalle fisheries harbour .

The Minister ordered the National Fisheries and Nautical Engineering Institution to send its Nagni vessel to rescue the stranded fishing vessel yesterday.


National Plan to protect children

The National Child Protection Authority (NCPA) will initiate National Plan under the direction of President Mahinda Rajapaksa to protect Sri Lankan children from all types of crimes. The main objective of this plan is protecting children from abductions, exploitation, abuse and other forms of crimes, NCPA Chairman Jagath Wellawatta said.


Book launch

Piyasena Wickramage's twelfth book written for children Man Podi Kale (Childhood of eleven eminent personalities of Sri Lanka) will be launched on August 31 at the National Library Services' Auditorium, Colombo 07 at 3 p.m.

The book is an insight to the magnificent childhood of the eminent personalities to inspire the children of today. Childhood memories of Martin Wickremasinghe, Professor Gunapala Malalasekera, Soliyas Mendis, P. De S. Kularathne, Dr. C. W. W. Kannangara, Professor Thennakoon Wimalananda, Professor Nandadasa Kodagoda, Professor Ananda Kaushalyana Thera, Wilmot A. Perera and Chitrasena have been complied in this book.


Monthly lecture

The monthly lecture of the Royal Asiatic Society of Sri Lanka will be held on August 31at 5.00 p.m. at the Gamini Dissanayake Auditorium of the Mahaweli Centre, No, 96, Ananda Coomaraswamy Mawatha, Colombo 07. The title of the lecture is 'Health Care in ancient Sri Lanka' presented by Daya Dissanayake.

The lecture is open to the public.


Peduru Party

A Peduru Party organised by the Old Anandians' 70-75 Group will be held at the P. Sara Stadium (Oval) Wanathamulla, Colombo 8 on August 29, Saturday from 7.30 p.m.


Charitha Hathak

Wilson Gunaratne's Charitha Hathak will go on the Boards on August 30 at 6 p.m. at the Elphinstone Theatre, Colombo.

It has been organised by the Seva Vanitha Branch of the Sri Lanka Army Ordnance Corps, as a fund raiser project.


Lecture on Hindu

The Executive Committee of the Institute of Cultural and Social Studies (ICSS) will hold a lecture on Relevance of Hindu Identity in Sri Lanka by H.H. Swami Vigyananda, Secretary and General Organizer of International "Visva Hindu Parishad" of India at Ramakrishna Mission (Seminar Hall), Wellawatta today at 5.30 p.m.


Residents object to renaming of road

Efforts were being made by certain individuals to rename Sanghamitta Mavatha, Bogahawatte, Pannipitiya as Subasighe Mavatha, though the residents of the area, predominantly Buddhists have objected to change the name of the road used for the past four decades, residents of the locality complained to Daily News recently.

The road was named after Therini Sanghamitta but a certain individual had been attempting to get the name of the road changed.


Writers' workshop in Badulla

The Badulla District Branch of Sri Lanka Writers' Association will hold a workshop on August 31 from 9.30 a.m. to 2.00 p.m. at the Auditorium of District Secretariat, Badulla Divisional Secretary of Ella D.M.L. Bandaranaike who is the Secretary of the Association says writers are welcome to do presentations on their books at the workshop.


CD release

Kampitha Sevaneli, a CD containing 16 songs sung by leading artistes to the lyrics written by Vice-Chancellor of the Fine Arts University Prof. Jayasena Kottegoda will be released at a ceremony at the John de Silva Memorial Hall on September 1 at 6 p.m.


Releasing of books

Six books translated to Sinhala language from Hindi language by D. P. Samarasinghe will be released at the Wijesuriya Books Emporium, Punchi Borella, Colombo 8 on September 1 at 3 p.m.

Human Rights Commission Additional Secretary and Land Reform Commission Chairman Nimal G. Punchihewa will be the chief guest. Professor Sarath Wijesuriya of the University of Colombo, Senior Author Lakshman Kahatapitiya and Dr. S. Premawansa will deliver special talks.


AGM

The 125th Annual General Meeting of the Public Service Mutual Provident Association (PSMPA) will be held at the John de Silva Memorial Theatre Hall, Colombo 7 today at 9 a.m.

According to the Joint Secretary and Treasurer D. L. Thilakaratne, this is one of the oldest association which had been formed by several government servants in 1883.


Lecture

A lecture by Dr. Indrajit Coomaraswamy on 'Global Economic Crisis and Strategic Challenges for Sri Lanka' organised by the 'National Centre for Advanced Studies in Humanities and Social Sciences' (NCAS), attached to the University Grants Commission, will be held on September 3 at 4 p.m. at 6A, Sukhastan Gardens, Ward Place, Colombo 7.

Dr. Coomaraswamy, a leading economist, is the former Director of Economic Affairs, Commonwealth Secretariat in London and a former staff officer of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka.


Diyawanna annual walk

The second annual walk of Diyawanna Walkers Club Sri Jayewardenepura Kotte will be held today (August 29) at 6.30 a.m.

The Assembly point will be the premises of the National Football Training Center at Baddegana and will proceed along Baddegana road to Kotte road, Mahindarama road, Ferry Road to Sri Lanka Nippon Friendship road, Sri Sunethrarama Vihara Mawatha and back to the Football Training Center.

The themes of the walk are to educate the public of the necessity to keep the Environment Clean and free of pollution.
