Mahaweli Authority does great service to country
Ishara Mudugamuwa
After 2004 the Mahaweli Authority of Sri Lanka was reborn with the
arrival of the UPFA. Earlier some people planned to close the Mahaweli
Authority. The Authority does a great service for the development of the
country. Hence we should protect it. This is the largest development
program of Sri Lanka.
It is very helpful to uplift the agriculture of the country as well
assist other development programs, said Agriculture Development and
Agrarian Services Minister Maitripala Sirisena at the 30th annual
meeting of the Mahaweli Technical Officers’ Association which was held
yesterday at the Agriculture Development and Agrarian Services Ministry.
He also said “ We have resettled more than 12,000 farmers in the
Mahaweli systems and we have started Moragahakanda – Kaluganga which is
the largest irrigation project of the country. As Agriculture Minister I
have a very big responsibility to develop the agriculture of the
country. To do this we should first pay our attention to the development
of the irrigation system.
All the workers of the Mahaweli Authority help me to do this task.
They have some problems over their salaries, promotions and some other
basic needs. I am always with them and I’ll solve their problems.”
Agriculture development and Agrarian Services Ministry Additional
Secretary Kamala Uyanwatta, Mahaweli Technical Officers Association
Secretary B.M. Nissanka, President Gamini S. Jayasiriwardane also
addressed the meeting.
