Child Protection Society AGM

The 81st Annual General Meeting of the Child Protection Society of Ceylon (CPS) will be held on Friday August 28 at 4 p.m. at the Mahaweli Centre Auditorium Colombo.

British High Commissioner Dr. Peter Richard Hayes will be the chief guest at the AGM.

Several items will be presented by the children of the Pamunuwa and Rukmal Child Development Centres, CPS Chairman S.S. Wijeratne said.

The public are invited to participate.


Namal won’t contest in SPC

Tharunyata Hetak organization Chairperson Namal Rajapaksa will not be contesting the Southern Provincial Council election as claimed by certain news reports published recently, the organization said in a press release yesterday.

“Reports also have stated that it was Namal Rajapaksa who invited the contestants assuring them the support of Tharunyata Hetak, in the election campaign.

”Ours is an organization exclusively motivated and committed to marshal the vigour and strength of the nation to the development of the motherland, irrespective of class, creed, political alliance or any other social standing.”

“People of all walks of life scattered throughout the island have assembled under the banner of this organization.

Any sort of linking this organization with politics is considered as an attempt to impair its reputation,” the release said.


Poached meat, pilfered manure netted

Two suspects illegally transporting 30 bags of subsidised fertilizer meant for farmers in a lorry along with five kg of venison were arrested by Police manning the Batticaloa junction checkpoint in Polonnaruwa yesterday.

The suspects along with the lorry and the illegal items were produced in the Polonnaruwa District Court yesterday.

Investigations are continuing.


Transit home for orphaned jumbos

A second transit home for orphaned baby wild elephants is being built at Mahadivulwewa.

The Wildlife Conservation Department will spend Rs. 2.2 million for it. The centre is in extent of 1,000 hectares. Baby elephants that become helpless due to the death of their mother elephants or after falling into unprotected wells are looked after in these shelter-homes known as Eth Athuru Sevana.


Pakistan Taliban chief dead

Pakistan Taliban chief Baitullah Mehsud died this month after a US missile strike, militant commander Hakimullah confirmed Tuesday, declaring himself the new leader of the militia.

A missile from a US drone aircraft hit the home of Baitullah Mehsud's father-in-law on August 5, and US and Pakistani officials have for weeks been saying they believe the feared warlord was killed.

Botanical gardens website launched

A website with information on Sri Lanka's botanical gardens was launched today by Sports and Public Recreation Minister Gamini Lokuge. The event marked the 3rd year anniversary of the Department of National Botanical Gardens, its Director General Dr. Siril Wijesundara said.

The website will have information and pictures on the fauna and flora and new development activities taking place in these gardens.

Sri Lanka Economic Association will launch two new Journals today at 5 p.m. at the OPA, Professional Centre, 2745/75, Prof. Stanley Wijesundra Mawatha, Colombo 07.


Pedestrian dies in accident

A pedestrian was knocked down and killed on the spot by a truck in Waskaduwa, Kalutara- North early yesterday morning. A truck plying from Weligama to Colombo caused the accident when its ran off the road and toppled. The pedestrian was walking along the road when he was hit and killed.

"The incident had occurred around 7.15am", police said. The driver was arrested. "The driver had fallen asleep and lost control of the vehicle", police said.


Raffle draw postponed

The Raffle draw organized by the G/Sanghamitta College OGA Colombo Branch which is to be held on August 30 at 3.30 p.m. at D.S. Senanayake College, Colombo has been postponed due to unavoidable circumstances.

The draw will be held on September 20 at the same venue at 3.30 p.m. The tickets which have been issued are valid till the said date.


Lecture series

The monthly lecture of the Royal Asiatic Society of Sri Lanka will be held at 5.00 p.m. on August 31, at the Gamini Dissanayake Auditorium of the Mahaweli Centre, No. 96, Ananda Coomaraswamy Mawatha, Colombo 07.

The lecture will be on "Health Care in ancient Sri Lanka" by Daya Dissanayake and is open to the public.

The Annual Bahirava pooja of the Anuradhapura Abhayagiri Viharaya will be held on August 26.
