Doe gives life after death

A doe which had died of gunshot injuries sustained from a trap gun placed by a poacher had given birth to a calf minutes after its death, according to a report from Siyambalewa, Anuradhapura.

It is said that a shrub jungle in a six acre plot of land in Siyambalewa owned by one Karunaratne is a famous haunt of a 25 strong herd of deer.

A poacher who had noted it had set a trap gun to kill the animals for meat. A pregnant doe had trampled the trap and received gunshot injuries and died.

The poacher had taken the carcass away and tried to skin the doe for meat when the deer calf emerged unharmed.

Karunaratne who had silently observed the doe's ordeal had alerted the Police which rushed to the scene and nabbed the poacher with the animal's carcass. He was to be produced in Court.

Anuradhapura Police is conducting further investigations.
