Probe into beautician's death at Kalubowila hospital

An investigation is now on in connection with the death of the beautician at the Colombo South Teaching Hospital, Kalubowila.

The Healthcare and Nutrition Ministry will conduct a separate investigation to find out whether State money had been spent over cosmetic surgeries, Healthcare and Nutrition Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva said. Minister de Silva said State hospitals and resources are there to treat patients and for their diseases and not to carry out cosmetic surgeries on ordinary, healthy people.

"It is the sole responsibility of hospital directors to manage their hospitals properly without letting such misconducts to take place in their hospitals," he said.

According to the Minister State hospitals and doctors perform certain cosmetic surgeries on patients who have suffered severe burn injuries and abnormalities in teeth. Such surgeries are carried out in State hospitals.

The Ministry will make arrangements to record a statement from the father of the dead beautician during its investigation, the Minister added.
