community, the students of Leeds International School, Panadura are
ready to present a theatrical adaptation of the internationally
acclaimed novel, Oliver Twist by Charles Dickens. Adapted for the
theatre by Jerome de Silva, this musical drama titled "Oliver", is
scheduled to go on boards at the Ummul Maleeha Memorial Hall, Panadura,
on 3rd and 5th September 2009.
A scene from the play |
Leeds International School was originally established in Panadura in
1999 and offers quality education from Play Group to Advanced Level
classes. Since its inception 10 years ago, it has branched out to Horana,
Payagala, Ambalangoda, Galle, and Matara.
The musical 'Oliver' is the first ever theatre production by Leeds
International School, and it brings together 25 students from ages 11 to
15 years.
The Principal of Leeds International School, Panadura, M. N.
Edussuriya, commenting on the theatre production said, "Our school has
always promoted professionalism in all activities and this drama
production stands as another occasion where team spirit and
professionalism comes through, combined with the outstanding talents of
our students. Young students are extremely resourceful and the Leeds
International School, Panadura promotes these hidden talents and
cultivates them further."
Well known theatre personality Jerome de Silva, who has worked
extensively with many leading schools in Colombo, on their theatre
productions, is guiding the theatre group in bringing together the play.
Jerome has over 80 productions to his credit and has directed the
highly acclaimed productions of Les Miserables, West Side Story, Cats,
The Lion King, Macbeth, Blood Brothers, Bugsy Melone and The Sound of
Music.
The cast of Oliver Twist |
The Chairman, Leeds International, Sarath Jayatissa, who was very
supportive of this activity, said, "The first ever theatre production,
"Oliver", by the school, has indeed been a great achievement in the
short history of Leeds International. We are extremely happy with the
dedication and team spirit displayed by the students as well as the
director and others involved in this theatre production."
The play, on the 'boy who asked for more', stands out as an
outstanding performance with hope for the future.
It is a story of finding your way through life and learning to make
the most of what one has. And of course, the element of fun and
enjoyment is incorporated in it, throughout!
