Five handloom textile training centres to be set up

The Government will set up five Handloom Textile Training Centres at welfare centres in Vavuniya to train internally displaced youth to produce value added handloom products that would enhance their living standards.

Speaking to the Daily News, Textile Development Minister Mahinda Rathnathilake said it is reported that around 72,000 youth are living in welfare villages. Therefore, the Government would launch this program as a self-employment project which would vastly improve their economic standards.

In addition, this will boost the traditional handloom industry in Sri Lanka providing proper recognition to local handloom products. The Minister said two buildings are under construction to set up two training centers at a cost of Rs. 1.6 million. It is planned to install 50 weaving machines in each centre spending Rs.5 million.
