Doctors in custody granted bail

The investigators who are conducting investigations into the four
doctors who had been detained under the Emergency Regulation told
Colombo Chief Magistrate and Additional District Judge Nisantha
Hapuarachchi yesterday that the four doctors had given false information
to the British and Foreign Media that the Internal Displace Persons (IDP’s)
are suffering without proper facilities to them.
At the outset Senior Defence Counsel E. Thambiah moving for bail
submitted to Court that his clients had acted on the instruction of the
LTTE leaders and given false information to the International Media. The
four doctors were taken into custody by the investigators from the
uncleared areas in Wellamulli Waikkal earlier.
The four doctors who were detained were Mullaitivu Medical
Superintendent Thangavelu Sathyamoorthi, Tiloanchalim Wallawar,
Weerakanthi Pillai Shanmugarajah and Krishuraja Vardharaja.
They were granted conditional personal bail of Rupees one million
with two sureties each. Judge Hapuarachchi directed the four doctors to
report at the Vavuniya CID Office once a month. Granting bail to the
four doctors, Judge Hapuarachchi directed them to appear in Court on
November 9. Senior Defence Counsel E. Thambiah with Thilak Wijesundera,
P. Navarajah instructed by Manjula Pathiraja appeared for the four
doctors. |
