UN concerned over Israeli settlements
UN Security Council continues to receive denunciations on continued
Israeli settlement activity in East Jerusalem and Gaza Strip.
During a consultation session at UN headquarters, Assistant
Secretary-General for Political Affairs Oscar Fernandez Taranco urged
Tel Aviv to stop evicting Palestine families and the demolition of their
homes.
The UN top official said that the Israeli illegal settlement activity
is a matter of grave concern and urged the Israeli government to heed
international law.
He also confirmed two weeks ago Israeli settlers had forcibly evicted
nine Palestine families, and handed over to a settlement organization.
They also mentioned the possible eviction of other 450 residents in the
region of Sheikh Jarrah.
On Friday, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay urged
Israel to cease and reverse illegal provocative actions, such as
demolitions and evictions in Palestine territories occupied by Tel Aviv.
Some 1,400 Palestine people have died during the attacks perpetrated
from Dec. 28, 2008 to Jan. 18, 2009. United Nations, Prensa Latina
